It’s that time of year – school is almost over and summer is coming! That means great weather and a chance to take some well-earned time off with the family. Fortunately, Fort Hood is geographically well situated in Central Texas, close to lots of activities and opportunities for an adventure.

Staying local and looking for something to keep the kids busy this summer? Check out Child and Youth Services.  They have two summer camps opening up for kids this summer – one for School Aged Care and one for Youth Services, offering fun activities and new experiences. Both are open for registration now and run from May 31 to Aug. 12. Stop by to see them on the first floor at the Shoemaker Center or visit their website at There are also some great hikes in the area to include Dana Peak and Chalk Ridge Falls, as well as activities at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, to include fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, mountain biking, camping and horseback riding. You can even rent a cottage at BLORA!

Want to get away from post for a day?  Pack a picnic and head to Zilker Park in Austin, maybe visit a museum and then check out the bats as they depart the Congress Street Bridge at sunset to forage for food.  You can also catch a baseball game in Round Rock and cheer on the Round Rock Express. Or you can head north to Waco and check out the Cameron Park Zoo, the Mammoth National Monument, the Texas Rangers Museum, the Dr. Pepper Museum or the Mayborn Museum Complex. Both Austin and Waco are only about an hour away from Fort Hood!

Ok to go a little farther? Head north and check out the Stockyards in Fort Worth, or head south to San Antonio to check out the River Walk, the Alamo or maybe have some fun at Fiesta Texas, Sea World or Schlitterbahn.  Whatever you decide to do always remember to do it safely! It’s getting hot, so drink lots of water and make sure you wear sunscreen and bug spray. Take a buddy with you and make sure you let someone know where you are going.

There’s tons more to do, whichever direction you decide to go. Either way, get out and have a fun adventure with family and friends, relax and make great memories this summer!
