Enlisted Soldiers from the 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command conduct an Esprit de Corps run July 17.

The 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command will host their 54th birthday celebration Sept. 24-27. Joined by the 13th Corps Support Command Association and community partners from around Texas, the week-long event will include a family fun run and cake cutting ceremony, sporting events, a birthday dinner and a wreath laying ceremony at the 13th ESC memorial honoring Soldiers who lost their lives in defense of the nation while serving with 13th ESC since 9/11.

“Birthday week provides us with an opportunity to revel in the accomplishments of the 13th and recognize those who came before us,” said Brig. Gen. Darren Werner, 13th ESC Commander. “The 13th ESC has a rich and storied history going back to the Vietnam War and we proudly carry that lineage with us today.”

Birthday week helps bring together the Soldiers, leaders, families and community members who support the 13th ESC.  It also gives the unit and people who support it the opportunity to celebrate its rich heritage and honor those who have served in the organization.

The 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command was activated in September 1965. Soldiers of the 13th ESC first deployed to Managua, Nicaragua, to assist in earthquake disaster relief on December 23, 1972.

Whether on a humanitarian mission or supporting the warfighter, 13th ESC has been involved in many operations in the United States and overseas.

“Since our activation in 1965, the 13th ESC has served this nation with honor and distinction,” Werner said.  “We have had an important mission within III Corps for the last 54 years and 13th ESC’s readiness and lethality are crucial to supporting III Corps’ core mission.”

The mission of the 13th ESC has evolved over the years, due to transformations and operation requirements of the Army.  In 1980 the unit was re-designated as the 13th Support Command, then as the 13th Corps Support Command in March 1989.  The 13th ESC was reflagged in its current configuration on Feb. 16, 2006.

In 2006 the 13th COSCOM Association – a non-profit organization – was created by veterans of the 13th ESC to support the unit and every year the 13th COSCOM Association helps in the planning and execution of the 13th ESC’s birthday week.

Closing out the week will be a Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony held on Hildner Field at 10 a.m. Sept. 21.  At the event, a wreath will be laid to honor fallen comrades from the 13th ESC.
