SEGUIN— Off the beaten path, and just a couple hours from Fort Hood, is this small, charming community.
Located Northwest of San Antonio, the town is a great destination for doing some small business shopping, catching some live theater and learning a thing or two about Texas history.
Going into Seguin, it is important to know a little about the history. The town was founded in 1838 by a group of Texas Rangers, who had been using it as a campsite for around ten years. The town was originally called Walnut Springs, but the name was later changed to honor Texas Revolutionary hero Juan Seguin.
Seguin’s main square is the big draw for many people. It’s very nostalgic of a time long past, and provides ample opportunity to shop small. Décor shops, antique stores and even a pet supply boutique are waiting for you to enjoy a little retail therapy. Something a little on the quirky side to check out is “The World’s Largest Pecan” located in front of the courthouse on the square. Overall, the area surrounding the courthouse is an amazing place to relax in the shade and take in the sights and sounds of downtown.
Sebastopol House State Historic Site is also located near the downtown area in Seguin. It’s a Greek Revival style house built in 1856, sitting on a couple beautiful acres of land. The house is one of the most beautiful buildings in Seguin, and is definitely a must-see.
As for parks, Seguin has many. Walnut Springs Park is a popular one where visitors can take in the natural scenery of a serene tributary of the Guadalupe River. This park is in walking distance to downtown and is really close to Seguin’s public library. For visitors who may want a little something different, Historic Riverside Cemetery dates back to 1800. If you decide to visit make sure to be respectful and stay on paths.
The Palace Theater in downtown Seguin is another must-see. Local theater performers often have live shows going on, and the theater sometimes features movies or live music. A movie museum is located within the theater and is available for viewing when an event is going on, or guests can contact the theater directly to schedule a private viewing.
A visit to Seguin is the perfect short day-trip to make on a day when you just want to get away and see somewhere new. Full of small town charm, history and nostalgia, Seguin is sure to be a place you want to return to time and time again.
