Burba, Ironhorse and West Fort Hood Physical Fitness Centers are now open to all Department of Defense cardholders.

“The gyms that are now open to all have not had high utilization (based on 50% occupancy limits), so there is adequate capacity to increase the facility’s customer base,” Brandi Crist community recreation chief for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, said.

She also added that the gyms were previously only opened to Soldiers, to allow them to remain physically ready, while also slowing the spread of COVID-19 last year.

Burba, Ironhorse and West Fort Hood Physical Fitness Centers were chosen to allow all DoD cardholders access due to their capacity, which allows more people to socially distance while working out. Harvey and Starker Physical Fitness Centers are still only open to active duty Soldiers only.

“The facilities identified have not had high utilization over the past month (based on 50% occupancy limits), and we are past the COVID-19 increase seen after the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, so they are being opened to all customers to increase physical readiness opportunities for all DoD ID card holders,” Crist said.

The DFMWR is excited to be able to allow all DoD cardholders back into some of the gyms.

“We are looking forward to returning to normal, as we miss seeing all of our customers in person and are eager to get back to providing programming for the community,” she stated.

Though they are slowly returning to normal, customers must take into account all of the COVID-19 safety precautions implemented in the gyms.

“First, all customers must wear a mask when entering the facility and when social distancing cannot be maintained,” Crist explained. “Secondly, please understand that operations will be different from pre-COVID-19. Staff conduct cleaning more often, equipment is adequately spaced and/or blocked off, and certain aspects of facilities (such as water fountains) are closed. We are working closely with the Preventative Medicine office to ensure facilities and programs are safe for the community, so please bear with us as we work through any future changes.”

Hours for Burba Physical Fitness Center are 5 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Hours for Ironhorse and West Fort Hood Physical Fitness Centers are 5 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Capacity for the gyms have been reduced to 50% and guests are not allowed. Soldiers have priority at all gyms.
