The Shamrockin’ Trail Run is the first virtual trail run hosted by the Directorate of Family and Morale Welfare & Recreation and will run from March 20-31.

Toni Kornegay, recreation specialist for DFMWR, said they always do a themed run around St. Patrick’s Day and this year they went with a trail run because they are becoming more popular and they wanted to mix it up from the normal 5K.

“Participants can run anywhere but there are great trails out at BLORA. They have novice, intermediate and advanced trails,” she said.

Each finisher will receive a medal and Kornegay said the procedures for this virtual run are the same for all the other virtual runs.

“Just like previous virtual runs, they should just send a screenshot of their results to and we will send their finishers medal to the address they provide or they can pick it up at the fitness office, Bldg. 23005, from 0800-1200 hours, Monday-Friday beginning April 1,” she said.

It has officially been a year since the St. Patrick’s GlowTastic 5K was hosted by MWR – the last in-person racing event before the pandemic hit full force. As grateful as she is that holding virtual events has allowed members of the Fort Hood community to participate in athletic events safely during the pandemic, she is hoping this will be the last virtual run.

“Yes, I think virtual was good because it allows people to still get out and be active. but there is nothing like an in-person race.”

She also wants to remind participants to put in the correct contact information when they register.

“Participants need to ensure they update their contact information when they register so that we can make sure they get their medal.

Kornegay said next month they are hoping to have their first in-person event since the pandemic began.

“We are scheduled to have our first in person event in over a year on April 17. It’s the Fort Hood’s Strongest Competition. Also, we are looking to do an in-person trail run on 26 June. Details coming soon.”

Cost for DoD ID cardholders is $15 and $20 for non-DoD ID cardholders. Participants need to send screenshots of their completions to Toni via her email no later than April 1.
