Hits from the 80’s poured out of the spinning room behind Abrams Physical Fitness Center, Aug. 20, during the Back to the 80’s spin event.
Instructor Pat Brown lead the class by encouraging the participants and challenging them to test their limits without causing severe damage to their bodies.
“I’ve been doing spin on Fort Hood for almost four years, and I love it. As a retired veteran, I still feel like I’m part of the Army family,” Brown said. “Indoor cycling or spin helps me get rid of the frustration. I get my cardio in and it’s easy on the body.”
She’s a very interactive instructor, often dancing in the middle of the bikes to the playlist she compiles for the class.
“My favorite part is when the clients put up with my shenanigans for the hour and a half,” she said.
Brown enjoys teaching themed spin classes because she learns new things while researching music and enjoys connecting with the participants through the throwback songs.
“Themed spin class lets me explore and also let the clients relive their favorite memories.”
Staff Sgt. Andre Roman, 15th Military Intelligence Battalion, and Jasmine Alicea participated in the 80’s - themed spin class because they enjoy trying new things while also being healthy.
“If anything, we’re people that like to try out new things. We started boxing, hiking, mountain biking, stuff like that,” Roman said. “We’re just trying anything and everything fitness.”
Roman said Alicea has worked hard to lose weight and trying new fitness things keeps things interesting.
“We finally… found our rhythm and it’s just going out and trying new things, seeing what we like, and doing it until we find the next thing,” Roman said.
While Alicea and Roman have figured out the rhythm of their fitness regime they also were ready to spin to the rhythm of their favorite 80’s hits.
“‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ by Whitney Houston (is) definitely one of my favorite songs,” Alicea said with Roman adding that his favorite 80’s song is “Take On Me” by Aha.
“I have two (favorite) eighties’ songs,” Brown said. “‘Separate Ways’ by Journey and ‘Maniac’ by Michael Sembello.”
The next spin class will be Motown-themed. For more updates on the class and other Directorate of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation events, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/forthoodfmwr/ or their website at https://hood.armymwr.com/.
