Gold Star Wives of America Inc. has been around since 1945, and though its name hints at women-only membership, it in fact provides service, support and friendship to the widows and widowers of military personnel who died on active duty or as the result of a service-connected cause.

In 1945, the Gold Star Wives of America Inc. was organized with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt to assist the Families left behind by fallen service members of the armed forces of the United States.

The first meeting of the Gold Star Wives of America Inc. was held April 5, 1945. Senate Resolution 67 designates Friday, April 5, 2013, as “Gold Star Wives Day” to honor and recognize the contributions of the members of the Gold Star Wives of America Inc.

This is a day set aside to recognize the sacrifices of Gold Star wives and the sacrifices of the Families of the fallen service members. Gold Star Wives of America Inc. is now in all 50 states of the union. Members appear before various House and Senate committees on issues concerning compensation, educational benefits, medical care and other programs pertaining to the welfare of military survivors.

Gold Star Wives of America Inc. is a congressionally chartered organization of widows and widowers of military members who died while serving on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability. Gold Star Wives of America Inc. is an all-volunteer organization encompassing approximately 10,000 members whose primary mission is to support Gold Star Wives after the death of their loved one and a place to connect with other widows.

In honor of Gold Star Wives Day, Fort Hood Survivor Outreach Services and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors hosts a Gold Star wives luncheon 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at the Fort Hood Survivor Outreach Services Center, Bldg. 10043 on Battalion Avenue.
