‘Salado’s Got Talent’

‘Salado’s Got Talent!’ Variety Show features area singers, musicians, actors and artists for a two-show fund-raiser benefitting the American Cancer Society at 7:30 p.m. July 3 and July 4, at the Silver Spur Theater.

“If you get a bang out of live entertainment, then ‘Salado’s Got Talent!’ should be more than a string of firecrackers,” say the producers of the two-hour variety show.

The show features a diverse slate of talented local performers, along with a “mystery guest.”

“Cancer is a disease that is physically, emotionally and financially devastating,” emphasized Rita Oden, Owner/Realtor of Salado Realty, and a performer for more than 16 years.“So this show is an evening of uplifting entertainment, a red-white-and-blue salute to everyone touched by cancer – patient, family members, caretakers and researchers. It’s our chance to fight back with fun!”

Admission is $15, $12 for senior citizens (65 and up), military personnel and students with an ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Salado Realty, First Community Title Salado, and First Salado Horizon Bank. Reservations are recommended.

Archeology Funshop

The Bell County Museum will host an archeology fun shop for children 5-7 years old from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday. Participants can dig in the archeology pits and discover objects from Native American and pioneer days.

Hands-on activities designed to enhance learning about the well-know archaeology site that borders Bell and Williamson counties will be based upon a new exhibit, The Gault Site: A Wealth of New Archeological Evidence.

Seth Shostak: Man, Mind, Machines

Seth Shostak entertains and informs with science, fantasy, and humor.

The Astronomical Society will co-host a visit by alien hunter Dr. Seth Shostak. His lecture will be held 4-6 p.m. Sunday in the Longhorn Conference Center at the Stagecoach Inn. A reception will follow the presentation.

Shostak will discuss the liklihood of humankind’s long-term survival, the next generation of space exploration, and what we might find among the stars. He also will give an update on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, when we might receive a signal from outside of our solar system and by whom it might be transmitted.

Registration is required, either in advance or at the door. Admission is $20 per person.

To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s

Continuing through July 20, celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library is hosting “To the Moon.”

The exhibit will cover events from the Sputniks through the first moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. Each step of the space programs will be featured, as well as the milestone flights of astronauts Alan Shepard, John Glenn and Ed White.

The White House Exhibit is on display at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library. Included in the exhibition are photographic overviews of rooms in the White House and a seven-eighths scale replica of the Oval Office as it was during the Johnson presidency.

The Lightning Ranch Rodeo begins at 8 p.m. every Saturday through August 29 and features the world’s only high-diving aqua mules.

The books close at 7:45 p.m., with the rodeo beginning at 8 p.m. There will be slack after each performance, and separate payoff and points for each night.

Louise Hays Park

The city of Kerrville is pleased to announce its annual Fourth of July Celebration, which will be held in Louise Hays Park. Festivities will begin at noon; bands begin to play at 1:00 p.m.

A variety of food, beverages and arts and crafts will be available for sale.

A variety of bands will provide music from noon until 9:30 p.m., including 50’s tunes, Texas-style, jazz, and 50’s- and 60’s-era pop and country.

The evening will conclude with the fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
