BOSS hosts events for single Soldiers during Family Time Thursdays such as this laser tag event held May 13 at Cinergy Cinema in Copperas Cove.
COPPERAS COVE – Every Thursday at 3 p.m. Soldiers across Fort Hood are released early from work to spend time with their families. With the constant deployment cycle at the Great Place, senior leadership makes sure Soldiers are allowed as much time with families as possible.

But, some Soldiers don’t have family in the area to spend this time with. Instead of sitting alone in their barracks rooms, single Soldiers now have somewhere to go, something to do and a family to spend time with.

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program has started providing activities during Family Time to give single Soldiers a sense of belonging and a fun activity to occupy their down time. Last week’s activity was laser tag at Cinergy Cinemas in Copperas Cove.

“We have done laser tag before and everyone really enjoyed it, so we decided to do it again and it was the same result – everyone had a great time. Although the turn out for laser tag this time was smaller, everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Pfc. Ryan Konewko, BOSS president.

Safety was first during the event and a video was shown to familiarize Soldiers with the rules and regulations of laser tag. They donned their sensor-lined vests and were armed with lasers. Teams were chosen and the blue and red teams entered the arena.

Numerous rounds of laser tag were played with teams changing up each round to help everyone get to know each other. The goal was to shoot the other players and get around them to take shots on their base camp. While there was no clear-cut winner, the day’s objective to have fun and socialize was met.

“It was high energy fun and I think everyone had a great time,” said Spc. Cat Wilson, BOSS representative, 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
