On Oct. 5 the 1st Battalion, 44th Air Missile Defense Artillery Regt., 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their barracks dayrooms and to show appreciation to volunteers, local organizations and single Soldiers that made a difference in the brigade’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program by donating money, goods and their time.

Ashley Furniture of Killeen donated two couches and two armchairs to the dayroom project. The Central Texas chapter of the Association of the United States Army donated $1,000 to help pay for electronics in the room. Wal-Mart stores in Killeen, Harker Heights, Temple and Copperas Cove held hot dog fund-raisers to help pay for the rest of the electronics, as well as other items, including paint, lighting and movie-themed wall décor. The Copperas Cove and Killeen Wal-Marts also provided volunteers to help paint the dayroom.

Unit leaders presented plaques and coins to representatives of each group, honoring their efforts. Killeen Wal-Mart General Manager Bob Sykes, Copperas Cove Wal-mart General Manager Edward Scholl and Dora Rojas, the community involvement coordinator for Wal-Mart in Copperas Cove, each said they appreciated the gesture and were happy to help.

It’s projects like this one that makes the greatest impact on single Soldiers in our unit. Our Soldiers now have a home-like environment to kick back and watch a movie. This is one of many steps the Fort Hood BOSS program is taking to improve our single Soldiers’ quality of life.
