Wednesday is the Fourth of July. Two-hundred-thirty-six years ago on that day, the United States declared its independence.

The second President of the United States, John Adams, wrote about celebrating this anniversary, in a letter to his wife. He wrote: “It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.”

Here at the Great Place, we certainly agree. This Fourth of July, Fort Hood is proud to host the Freedom Fest. The event will feature a 21-gun salute, miniature stock car racing, a display of military equestrian skill by the 1st Cavalry Division’s Horse Cavalry Detachment, military working-dog demonstrations, a mechanical bull, grocery cart races, Family activities, a military salute to the nation and more.

The talented Kelly Clarkson will perform and the event will be capped off with fireworks in the finest of Fourth of July traditions. I’m certain John Adams himself would have approved. For more information about Freedom Fest, look for the link on the Fort Hood home page, www.hood.army.mil.

The Fourth of July is a great time for all of us. While we celebrate, let’s remember to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Heat, fireworks and alcohol are the three biggest sources of injury during this annual holiday.

Heat is number one. The Directorate of Emergency Services reports that at last year’s Freedom Fest, they treated 200 people for heat-related problems. That means that you should all prepare for Freedom Fest by making sure you drink enough water starting on the day BEFORE the event.

It is illegal to set off fireworks on Fort Hood, and it can be dangerous for all the obvious reasons. We have brought in licensed and skilled professionals to put on a fine show for the Freedom Fest finale. Enjoy their work, avoid needless injury and stay out of trouble.

There will be alcoholic beverages for sale this year, but not until after 4 p.m. Remember, alcohol and dehydration go hand-in-hand, especially in this heat. A designated driver and lots of water are the ticket to safety and fun whether at Freedom Fest, or anywhere else on this Fourth of July.

Let’s all enjoy this wonderful American holiday safely.

Happy 236th Independence Day, America!
