Next week, we will all have the privilege of celebrating the Fourth of July, America’s Independence Day. The folks at the Fort Hood Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation have put together an outstanding celebration truly worthy of the Great Place – and more importantly, of you, the Soldiers and Families of America’s Hammer.

Freedom Fest begins at 1 p.m. on Sadowski Field in front of the III Corps Headquarters building. There will be a carnival, miniature stock car racing, a fishing pond, climbing wall and many more activities for you and your Family to enjoy.

The fireworks show is the final event of Fort Hood’s Freedom Fest. Choreographed to patriotic music, this 30-minute show is, by reputation, one of the best fireworks shows in Central Texas.

Freedom Fest is truly a Family-friendly event. I hope you bring your friends and Family so that they can see what you and the Great Place are all about.

Most importantly though, regardless of where you choose to celebrate, be safe, be responsible and be alert for actions that can result in injury or loss of life. Make sure you have a plan and celebrate safely.

Fireworks go with the Fourth of July like Christmas trees go with Christmas, but please understand the risks. If you live on post, fireworks are not allowed. If you live off the installation, make sure you know the municipal and county laws regarding fireworks before you set off your own fireworks show. Also, read and understand the warning labels on the fireworks and act accordingly.

If alcohol is part of your celebration, be responsible. We’ve all heard this before, but it happens every year. If you see someone at risk of hurting himself or others, don’t just stand there, intervene! We must be alert to potential risks and get involved before something bad happens.

Do not drink and drive! It’s reckless and it could get you or someone else killed. It’s too easy to arrange for a designated drive to call a taxi or to call the courtesy patrol. Leaders, make sure your Soldiers have a plan before they go out and celebrate. Make no mistake about it, there’s absolutely no excuse for loss of life or injuries related to excessive use of alcohol.

Enjoy the Fourth of July and time with Family and friends. Celebrate responsibly and look out for each other. Together we can ensure that this Independence Day is safe and free from senseless accidents.
