Combatives tourney starts end of July In 2011, the III Corps combatives team celebrated its second consecutive Army team championship. Later this month, Fort Hood hosts the 2012 tournament with the hopes of winning a third-straight team title. The 2012 U.S. Army Combatives Championship begins July 25 with weigh-ins at Kieschnick Physical Fitness Center. Preliminary rounds will be fought beginning at 9 a.m. at the Abrams Physical Fitness Center July 26. Semifinal bouts begin at 9 a.m. at Abrams July 27. The finals begin at 4 p.m. July 28 at Abrams. Summer Special All summer long, the Phantom Warrior Lanes at Fort Hood offers a “Summer Special.” Throughout the summer months, every weekday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., the bowling alley offers special discounted rates on open bowling. During the summer, the cost of each game is $1.75 per bowler. The Summer Special at the lanes runs through Aug. 24, and the price does not include shoe rentals and cannot be used with other specials or promotions. THROUGH Friday

Wellness, civilian fitness

The enrollment dates for the Employee Wellness and Civilian Fitness Program ends Friday.

The program offers full-time Department of Defense civilian employees the opportunity to take three one-hour sessions per week to improve their fitness level. The six-month program is open to all DoD full-time employees serving at Fort Hood.

The next assessment period for the program is Aug. 7-8 at the Abrams Physical Fitness Center. During this assessment, employees will undergo a health screening and determine body composition, fitness level and flexibility.

Throughout the program, employees receive health and fitness education tips, as well as a monthly newsletter from the III Corps and Fort Hood Health Promotion office.

Emerging Leader Course

Unit leaders and their spouses fill many roles, such as supporter, adviser, mentor, organizer, communicator and role model. The Military Spouse Emerging Leader Course is designed to equip future or current spouse unit leaders with key information and resources to become a productive, proactive member of a unit team.

JuLY 26

Attack of the Clones

Celebrity look-alikes and

sound-alikes will showcase their talents and likeness to famous entertainers in front of an audience and judges at 7 p.m. July 26 in the Phantom Warrior Center.

All contestants will perform, in costume and in character, for three to five minutes. Judging will be based on costume, voice, talent and authenticity of their celebrity portrayal.

ACS temporary closure

Fort Hood Army Community Service will temporarily close at 2 p.m. July 26 to conduct team-building activities for the ACS Birthday. Standard Army Community Service operations will resume July 27.

During this temporary closure, the ACS Army Emergency Relief office, located in the Rivers Building, will remain operational for those requiring emergency financial assistance.

Book signing

Texas author Leila Meacham will sign her latest book “Tumbleweeds” at the Clear Creek Main Exchange from 4-6 p.m. July 28.



August 4

Book signing

Best selling author Brad Thor will sign copies of his latest release, “Black List” at the Clear Creek Main Exchange from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 4.



Through aug. 17

Open Skate

The Skate and Aerobics Center at Bldg. 324, 37th Street is now open for open skate, every Friday during the summer.

The skate center will open early at 1 p.m. and remain open until midnight. For $5, guests can skate day and night.

Kindergarten Summer Camp

Fort Hood’s Child, Youth and School Services is hosting a Kindergarten Summer Camp program for children who completed kindergarten during the 2011-12 school year.

The camp offers many activities and field trips. Camp fees are based on a weekly schedule, and parents may choose the activities and events for their children.

Children must be registered with CYSS to participate. The camp runs 5:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Aug. 24 at the Kouma Child Development Center.

Summer Spectrum Day Camp

School-age care Summer Spectrum Day Camp is open to children in grades 1-5 and offers kids excitement and adventure throughout the summer.

This year’s camp theme is for children to become “Our Super Heroes.” The camp runs through Aug. 24, Monday through Friday, from 5:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

High Adventure Camp

The Comanche Youth Center hosts a Super High Adventure Middle School Camp every weekday throughout the summer from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

The camp offers children, grades 6-9, a variety of activities and events to fill their summer.

Youth may attend as many or as few of the camp days, as desired, as registration for new attendees is open throughout the duration of the camp. The middle

Outdoor Recreation permits

All patrons engaging in authorized outdoor recreational activities in

Fort Hood training areas must obtain a Fort Hood Permit before patronage.

Authorized outdoor recreational activities include but are not limited to: hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, bird watching, utilizing the designated all-terrain vehicle area and horseback riding.

Parent Advisory Council

The Child, Youth and School Services Parent Advisory Council welcomes all parents of children who are registered members

of CYSS to participate in the council.

The PAC meetings are held

the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in the Rivers Building, Bldg. 121, on the corner of T.J. Mills Boulevard and 761st Tank Battalion Avenue.

Common Sense Parenting

All parents are invited to a free parenting class each Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Oveta Culp Hobby Soldier and Family Readiness Center.

The class is a six-week program, but parents may join the program at any point. The class is open to all Soldiers and Family members.

Thursday Music Mix

Check out the Backbone NCO Lounge every Thursday from 3-8 p.m., where a live disc jockey will spin tunes.

Besides the music mix, the lounge features popcorn and finger foods, a new covered patio, indoor and outdoor televisions.

The Backbone NCO Lounge is open to noncommissioned officers, corporal and above, their guests and the civilian community. The lounge is located inside the Phantom Warrior Center, Bldg. 194. on 37th Street.

Officers and their guests are invited to check out Legends Pub from 3-8 p.m. every Thursday and 4:30-9 p.m. every Friday.

Army Career and Alumni Program Calendar

The Army Career and Alumni Program center is in the Copeland Soldier Service Center, Bldg. 18010.

The office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday.

Appointments are required for seminars and workshops.

ACAP’s Computer Lab is available to clients during afternoon hours only. The change in hours is due to a new Department of Defense procedural guidance expanding the pre-separation briefings.
