Lt. Gen. Don Campbell Jr., III Corps and Fort Hood commanding general; Kris Perkins, the director of Fort Hood’s combatives program; and Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur L. Coleman Jr., III Corps and Fort Hood command sergeant major, join the III Corps Combatives Team in raising the Lacerda Cup, which is awarded to the top team at the U.S. Army Combatives Championship each year, Saturday inside Abrams Physical Fitness Center at Fort Hood. The III Corps team tallied 441 team points, surpassing the 3rd Infantry Division team out of Fort Stewart, Ga., on the final day of the competition. With the win, Fort Hood’s team captured its third-consecutive championship, and second in a row in front of a home crowd at the Great Place. The 3rd Inf. Div. team finished with 407 points, while the team from Fort Carson, Colo., finished in third place with 365 points. Fort Hood had a tournament-high eight fighters competing in the finals. Finishing in second place was Staff Sgt. Shane Lees, lightweight; 2nd Lt. Nick Shafer, welterweight; and Sgt. Jason Reyes, heavyweight. The five third-place finishers were Spc. Larry Jackson, bantamweight; Staff Sgt. Aaron Riley, flyweight; Sgt. Philip Platt, welterweight; Capt. Jason Norwood, middleweight; and Sgt. Jose Espinosa, light heavyweight.
