On a beautiful Thursday morning, one made better because of an upcoming four-day weekend, 28 teams turned out for the monthly Phantom Warrior Scramble Aug. 30 at the Courses of Clear Creek.
III Corps and Fort Hood Commanding General Lt. Gen. Don Campbell Jr. said it was great to see the Soldiers coming out to participate in the scramble.
“We try to make sure commanders know that we want them to put teams together,” Campbell said. “To see a lot the Soldiers get out is really the key. They come and hit the ball, learn the game and just have fun. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Throughout the scramble, Campbell and his foursome – which included Brig. Gen. James Richardson, III Corps and Fort Hood deputy commanding general, and Brig. Gen. Dean Milner, III Corps and Fort Hood deputy commanding general (Canada) – found themselves in a friendly competition with the 1st Cavalry Division’s command team foursome, headed up by Maj. Gen. Anthony Ierardi, the division’s commanding general.
“Spirited, that’s what I would say,” Ierardi said of the competition.
“We’re not losing sleep on whether we win or lose,” Campbell said. “We just want to beat Gen. Ierardi’s team. Success today is not to let the First Team team win.”
Campbell said he and the III Corps team, which was positioned directly in front of the 1st Cav. team on the tees, were watching the First Team very carefully.
“We’ve been known to kick a few of their balls back under a rock,” he slyly added.
After both teams birdied the same hole, Armadillo Hills Hole 8, the III Corps team, at -3, sat one stroke ahead of 1st Cav., but Ierardi said he liked his chances.
“We have a few secret weapons here, so I think we’re going to be all right,” he said. “They got a little worried when I signed this team up.”
Both teams wound up tied at the end of the day with a score of 67, five under par, but seven strokes behind the leader.
